February, 2016 – Original or Copy
By Dr. Bonnie Lyon

Have you ever hidden who you are so you’d be accepted? Do you feel valued and significant for exactly who you are or do you feel like an imposter? It’s common for people, especially women, to go to great lengths to conform, fit in and “be” like everyone else.

The pressures come from within ourselves as we observe and filter through the messages the outside world foists onto us with lifestyle and fashion trends, new advances in plastic surgery and all sorts of self-improvement methods, practices and products. Every woman knows there’s always a way to ‘look” and a way to “be” that is dictated by your environment. It’s been that way forever from skirt lengths to botox to false eyelashes and hair straightener. Even if you live in a place like Oregon or Colorado where people go more “natural.” than in big cities, there’s still the lure of Patagonia chic! It’s always something.

You not only need to look a certain way to fit in, you are expected to “be” a certain way as well. Educated, successful ambitious in the workforce yet Martha Stewart or Rachel Ray in the home. Whew! No wonder at the end of the day you may be feeling empty, disconnected and lonely.  What is wrong with this picture?

Hey, you can never be too rich or too thin, right?

By striving to conform to what society dictates how you should look, what you should wear and who you should hang out with, you can lose yourself, your own God-given uniqueness.  When you try to be something that you are not you essentially separate from your true self and are left feeling incomplete, isolated and anxious.

Today, I want to remind you were born an original. When you place effort toward be a “copy” you give away who you are, you compromise yourself. In the long run, this will leave you increasingly unhappy, angry and much less then you could be if you instead made the effort to be as authentically you as you can be.

If you are sad, frustrated and estranged from your true self, I can take you on a journey back to knowing the real you. Give me a call and let’s get started so you can find the guts to be an original today. The world needs you, the original unique you even if it means that you need to stop all the conforming you’ve been doing. It’s the antidote to all the needless pretending you’ve been doing all these years. Let’s get started!
